Logical Fallacies in Debate

In one of my previous blogs I expressed my opinions about what it means to be in good debate. I was exploring more about how debates are structured and how we can shape them better. During this I came across famous book of aristotle the Rhetoric. I made an attempt to read it and understand but being non native english speaker it was too complex for me. Then I started reading simple book Mastering Logical Fallacies by Michel Withey. The book has made it really simple. I am still in middle of it. But I skimmed through all fallacies and read more online about it. This blog is my sincere attempt towards making readers aware what fallacies you may generally encounter in debates or arguments.

What is a logical fallacy?

A logical fallacy is an error in reasoning that weakens an argument. It doesn't necessarily mean the conclusion is wrong, it means the way someone arrived at that conclusion is flawed. Fallacies are used unknowingly most of the time, people just pick up patterns of arguing from the people and media around them without ever examining if the reasoning itself holds up. But sometimes fallacies are used deliberately too, because winning the argument becomes more important than finding out what is actually true. Once you start recognizing these patterns in others, you will also start noticing them in your own arguments, which in my experience is the more useful part of learning about fallacies.

Below are some of the fallacies I found myself running into the most, both as someone making them and as someone on the receiving end of them.

Ad Hominem

Ad Hominem means attacking the person instead of engaging with their argument. Instead of addressing what was actually said, the focus shifts to who said it, their character, their background or their motives.

Example: During a discussion about climate policy, someone says "You can't trust his opinion on this, he doesn't even have a science degree." His degree, or lack of it, says nothing about whether the specific point he made is right or wrong. The argument needed to be addressed on its own merit.

Straw Man

Straw Man is when someone misrepresents or oversimplifies another person's argument to make it easier to attack, and then attacks that weaker, distorted version instead of the actual point being made.

Example: Person A says "I think we should have some regulation on social media to reduce misinformation." Person B replies "So you want the government to control everything we say online?" That is not what Person A said, Person B has built a more extreme version of the argument that is easier to knock down.

False Dilemma

Also called the black-and-white fallacy, this happens when an argument presents only two options as if they are the only possibilities, when in reality more options exist.

Example: "Either you support this policy completely, or you don't care about the problem it's trying to solve." Most real situations have more than two positions, someone can care about the problem and still disagree with this particular solution.

Slippery Slope

Slippery Slope argues that a relatively small first step will inevitably lead to a chain of related, increasingly extreme events, without any real evidence for why each step must follow the last.

Example: "If we let employees work from home two days a week, soon nobody will want to come to office at all, and eventually the whole company culture will fall apart." Each step in that chain is assumed, not demonstrated.

Appeal to Authority

This fallacy leans on the opinion of an authority figure as proof that something is true, even when that authority isn't actually relevant to the topic being discussed, or when experts themselves disagree on it.

Example: "A famous actor said this supplement works, so it must work." Being well known or successful in one field doesn't make someone's opinion on an unrelated field automatically correct.

Appeal to Emotion

Appeal to Emotion tries to win an argument by manipulating the listener's emotions, like fear, pity or anger, rather than by using valid reasoning.

Example: "If you really cared about your family's safety, you would agree to this policy." This tries to make disagreement feel like a moral failure instead of addressing whether the policy is actually effective.

Bandwagon

The Bandwagon fallacy, also known as appeal to popularity, argues that something must be true or correct simply because a lot of people believe it or do it.

Example: "Everyone I know thinks this is the best approach, so it clearly is." Popularity of a belief has never been proof of its correctness, plenty of widely held beliefs through history turned out to be wrong.

Circular Reasoning

Circular Reasoning, also called begging the question, is when the conclusion of an argument is used as one of the premises that supposedly supports it. The argument essentially goes in a circle instead of proving anything.

Example: "This book is the greatest ever written because it says so on the cover, and the cover wouldn't say that if it wasn't true." The claim is being used to prove itself.

Hasty Generalization

Hasty Generalization happens when a broad conclusion is drawn from a sample that is too small, too specific, or not representative enough to support it.

Example: "I met two people from that city and both were rude, people from there must be rude in general." Two data points say very little about an entire population.

Red Herring

A Red Herring is an attempt to redirect the discussion towards an unrelated topic, to distract from the actual point being argued.

Example: While discussing whether a project deadline is realistic, someone says "Well, at least we shipped something last quarter, unlike the other team." The comment doesn't address the deadline in question at all, it just shifts attention elsewhere.

Conclusion

This is by no means an exhaustive list, there are many more fallacies out there, and I am still learning about a lot of them myself. But I found that even knowing this many gets you pretty far in noticing when a debate or argument is drifting away from actual reasoning. The purpose of pointing out a fallacy should never be to simply win the argument by naming it, it should be to bring the discussion back to solid reasoning. I hope this blog helps you spot these patterns a little earlier, both in the arguments you hear and in the ones you make yourself.
